Acceleration vs Max Velocity: The Two Types of Speed Every Athlete Needs
When most people think about "speed," they picture one thing: how fast an athlete can run. But speed isn't a single skill. It's actually two distinct qualities, acceleration and max velocity, and most athletes are only training one of them.
Understanding the difference is the key to unlocking real gains on the field, court, or track.
What Is Acceleration?
Acceleration is how quickly an athlete goes from a standstill (or slow movement) to top speed. It's the explosive burst off the mark, the first 10 to 20 metres of a sprint.
In sports like rugby, AFL, soccer, and netball, acceleration is the speed quality athletes use most. A winger breaking from a ruck, a striker beating a defender to the ball, a netballer driving into space, these are all acceleration actions. Very few sporting moments involve a true, sustained sprint to top speed.
What Is Acceleration?
Acceleration relies on:
Force production – how hard an athlete can push into the ground
Body angles – forward lean and shin angle in the drive phase
Stride mechanics – powerful, piston-like leg drive rather than long, reaching strides
What Is Max Velocity?
Max velocity is an athlete's absolute top speed, the point where they're no longer accelerating and are instead maintaining their fastest possible pace. This usually kicks in somewhere between 30 and 60 metres, depending on the athlete's development and sport.
Max velocity matters most in track sprinting and in sports with longer open-field opportunities, like a fullback chasing down a kick or a winger sprinting the length of the pitch.
What Is Max Velocity?
Max velocity relies on:
Stride frequency and stride length working together efficiently
Upright posture and reduced ground contact time
Elastic strength – the ability to use the tendons and muscles like a spring rather than relying purely on muscular force
Why the Distinction Matters
Here's the problem we see often at Elevate Performance: athletes and parents assume "speed training" is one generic thing, so a program either overtrains one quality or ignores the other entirely.
If an athlete only trains acceleration, they may struggle to hold their speed over longer efforts and can hit a ceiling in sports requiring sustained sprints. If an athlete only trains max velocity mechanics without building acceleration strength, they'll be slow off the mark, costing them the split-second advantage that decides most game situations.
The best speed programs train both qualities, in the right proportions, based on the demands of the athlete's sport.
